INFORMATION ABOUT THE SEEDS WE USE IN OUR FOOD PLOT BLENDS
LADINO CLOVER - It’s a perennial clover that is the Whitetail deer’s favorite clover. It’s a large white
clover, which makes up about half the total white clover acreage in the U.S. It’s very high in nutritive
value and palatability. It is two to four times as large as common white clover.
DUTCH WHITE CLOVER - A strain of white clover, that is perennial. Grows vigorously even in poor clay
subsoil. Withstands drought, grows well all over the U.S., even on barren soil where nothing else wants
to grow. Winter hardy and it stays so low you can just till it under in spring if you are using it for a cover
crop.
YELLOW BLOSSOM SWEET CLOVER - Sweet clover thrives under a wide range of soil and climatic
conditions. It is drought resistant, winter-hardy. It’s quite alkali tolerant and even likes limestone soils.
Sweet clover is not quite as palatable as most other legumes but is very drought-tolerant. It is a true
biennial. There are white and yellow-blossomed varieties of sweet clover. The yellow flowered species
are higher quality.
MEDIUM RED CLOVER - Most widely adapted of the true clovers. This short-lived perennial is grown in
Canada and most of the U.S. Red clover will grow on moderately acidic soil, but yields are maximized
when pH is 6.0 or higher.
ALSIKE - It’s especially well adapted to cool climates and wet soils, will tolerate flooding for
considerable periods. It will also produce well on well-drained soils. Does well on soils to acidic for red
clover, and will tolerate more alkalinity than most clovers; however, it responds to lime application. May
be readily established on poorly drained or overflow land. Flowers are pink or white. It's a fast starting,
winter hardy, acid-tolerant and flood-tolerant clover adapted to the North.
NORTHERN HARDY ALFALFA - Alfalfa is an excellent source of protein. In fact, there is nothing readily
available that produces more crude protein than high quality alfalfa. Deer will hammer it all summer and
for as long as the plant remains nutritious into the fall. They will also start on it as early as possible in
the spring. Also, a properly maintained alfalfa plot will last up to seven years and is fairly drought
tolerant. Alfalfa is tops on the legume list, because of its very high quality and very high production. The
benefits/rewards are great in quality, production, and longevity, which become directly beneficial to
your deer herd.
CHICORY - It’s a perennial that is highly nutritional for the summer and fall feeding. Is excellent for deer
and withstands heavy grazing. Chicory has a deep taproot and is very drought resistant and is high in
mineral as well as protein content.
DWARF ESSEX RAPE - It’s a member of the Brassica (mustard) family. Is high quality and easy to grow in
acid soil, low fertility and drought. Often, heavy use will not begin until December or January (when
frosts increase sugar content of the leaves). Dwarf Essex Rape is a plant with big leaves like broccoli
and deer will also feed heavily on them after the first hard freeze and into the winter. The advantage of
brassicas is the fact that deer generally will leave them alone until the onset of colder weather at which
time the plot will become very attractive.
